A Sign of Affection

Yuki Itose has lived her whole life in a world where sound does not guide her, so she builds meaning through what she can see, what she can read, and the small routines that keep her days predictable. She communicates through sign language, texting, and lip reading, and she has learned to endure the awkward pauses that happen when strangers do not know how to meet her halfway. One day on a crowded train, she gets stuck in an uncomfortable moment with a foreigner speaking a language she cannot follow, and a fellow student, Itsuomi Nagi, steps in to help. That simple intervention changes the scale of Yuki’s world. Itsuomi is outgoing, multilingual, and drawn to travel, the kind of person who moves through life like borders are just suggestions. He is also someone who does not know sign language, which means their connection has to be built deliberately, through patience and the willingness to learn rather than the assumption that feelings will translate on their own. As Yuki spends time with him, she starts pushing against the limits she accepted as normal, not by «fixing» herself, but by asking for more from life, friendships, and love. The story is tender without being naïve, because it recognizes how easily care can become control, and how important it is that Yuki remains the narrator of her own experience, not a symbol for someone else’s growth.
