The Rose of Versailles (Movie)

Set in late 18th-century France, the film follows Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a son to command the Royal Guards, and Marie Antoinette, sent from Austria to marry the crown prince. Oscar oversees Antoinette’s entry into court, managing scandals and surveillance as the queen forms a bond with Swedish count Hans Axel von Fersen. Oscar’s attendant and childhood friend André Grandier witnesses her growing conflict between service to the crown and sympathy for the people. Economic strain and street unrest intensify; rumors and court intrigue erode royal authority. As protests spread into open revolt, military orders to fire on citizens push Oscar to break ranks. The Bastille falls and the revolution accelerates, forcing choices that sever relationships and end the ancien régime’s hold, while the fates of Oscar, André, Antoinette, and Fersen are decided by the tide of events.
