In a world where spells are drawn with ink, Coco, a dressmaker’s daughter, dreams of learning magic despite the rule that only witches may use it. When the traveling mage Qifrey visits her village, she glimpses him inscribe a sigil and realizes anyone could cast a spell by copying the pattern. Using a mysterious book and pen she once received from a brimmed hat stranger, Coco traces a design and triggers a petrification that turns her mother to stone. Qifrey intervenes, conceals the incident from the authorities, and brings Coco to his atelier as an apprentice so she can study safely and search for a way to reverse the spell. Training alongside other pupils under strict secrecy laws, Coco learns how tiny changes in linework alter effects, while Qifrey quietly hunts the Brimmed Caps, a rogue group that spreads forbidden designs and seeks to overturn the rules of magic. As tests, rescues, and raids unfold, Coco’s practice ties the origin of the book to the wider conflict.
