Liz and the Blue Bird

Mizore Yoroizuka and Nozomi Kasaki are in their final year at Kitauji High School and rehearse a difficult concert piece built around the tale of Liz and a blue bird. Mizore plays the oboe part and sees the story through her fear of losing Nozomi after graduation. Nozomi plays flute, moves easily through the band, and does not notice how tightly Mizore has built her days around her. Rehearsals expose the gap between them. Mizore holds back so their duet can stay balanced, while Nozomi begins to understand that her friend’s talent and future may reach farther than her own. Their teachers and bandmates push them toward a cleaner performance, but the real problem is not technique. The fairy tale they play becomes a mirror. At first Mizore thinks she is Liz, the one left behind, and Nozomi is the bird who will fly away. Slowly both realize the roles are reversed. Mizore has to stop shrinking herself to remain close, and Nozomi has to let her go without turning affection into a chain. A final rehearsal forces the truth into sound. Mizore plays freely, Nozomi breaks, and their friendship changes from dependence into a quieter promise to keep moving on separate paths.
