There are times when fear of other people takes hold of our lives. That fear can rob us of confidence, force us to hide our knowledge and skills, and sometimes even crush our desire to connect with others. Such a dramatic fate befell a boy named Shiki. Ever since childhood, Shiki was a passionate reader. Books were his faithful companions, and he devoured knowledge like a consuming flame. Yet his friends and peers seemed to shun him, as if he were something unapproachable or even frightening.

Shiki was left alone, and his days passed among the shelves of the library where his mother worked. But, as often happens, fate had something completely unexpected in store. After entering high school, Shiki found himself in the world of quizzes and intellectual battles. There, his knowledge became not a curse but a great treasure. His insight, creativity and analytical ability finally found their place. He joined the quiz club, where his talent for answering the most difficult questions took on new value.
