After one version of his life comes to an end, Kotarou Tennouji finds himself in a new world. At first glance it resembles the one he knew, but it turns out to be empty, without friends or familiar faces, leaving him alone with endless questions. Wandering the deserted streets, he faces only emptiness until he happens upon a hill where, beneath a spreading tree, he meets the mysterious Kagari, absorbed in her research. She is searching for a special version of the future in which humanity can go on existing and avoid ruin and destruction.

Her studies concern the many possible lives of the Earth itself, and each discovery brings her closer to understanding how the planet can be saved. Kotarou, without grasping all the details, decides to help, because his memories of happy days with his friends from the Occult Research Club will not leave him in peace. Akane, Chihaya, Shizuru, Kotori and Lucia remain part of a past he longs to return to, and for its sake he is ready to take a risk and trust his enigmatic companion. Little by little he is drawn into a whirl of incredible events where the secrets of the universe, the fate of humanity and his own feelings intertwine.
