Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino

Il Teatrino continues the story of the Social Welfare Agency, an Italian government organization that presents itself as a charity while its Section 2 carries out covert counterterrorism operations. Its agents are young girls who survived tragedy and were given cybernetic bodies, then conditioned to obey the adult handlers with whom they are paired on every mission.

When the Agency investigates the disappearance of one of its operatives, the trail leads straight into the lair of its old rival, the Five Republics Faction, a separatist terrorist group bent on dividing Italy. Triela, one of the most experienced of the cyborg girls, infiltrates the hostile organization in search of answers, but her investigation is cut short when she finds herself staring down the barrel of a gun.

Like the series it follows, Il Teatrino balances tense action with the quiet tragedy of girls whose lives have been reshaped into tools of the state, and of the handlers who must decide whether to treat them as weapons or as people.
