In ancient times a peaceful world prevailed, where humans and demons lived side by side in harmony, enjoying a long era of calm. But someone has disturbed the peace of centuries: demons have begun attacking humans, and a plot is under way to resurrect Gyumao, a great demon imprisoned for thousands of years. Genjo Sanzo, a brilliant Buddhist priest and envoy of the heavenly lords, possesses not only striking looks but also a fair share of pride – and he is anything but a typical holy man.

His quiet life is disrupted by a mysterious call that draws him to the heights of the majestic mountains. There he finds Son Goku, a young man with golden eyes who has lost all memory of his past. The gods charge Sanzo with stopping Gyumao's resurrection and restoring the balance between the worlds of humans and demons. So begins Sanzo's journey to the west, joined by two more companions: the red-haired half-demon Sha Gojyo and the demon Cho Hakkai, who wields magical powers. This quartet does not yet suspect how closely their fates will intertwine over the course of dangerous adventures and incredible trials, along a road full of mysteries and peril where each step brings them closer to a truth that could change everything.
