Takaki Tono’s life is told in separated pieces that never fully reconnect, even when he tries. As a child he meets Akari Shinohara and they become inseparable in the quiet way two lonely kids can be, until family moves force them apart and turn closeness into letters, then into distance. Takaki keeps chasing the feeling that the next train ride, the next message, the next moment will bring back what was lost, but time keeps slipping forward anyway. In high school, someone else, Kanae Sumida, stands close enough to see what Takaki cannot let go of, yet he is always looking past what is in front of him. Adulthood does not solve anything, it just gives him fewer excuses, and the past stays sharp in the most ordinary places.
