Saki: The Nationals

The 71st National High School Mahjong Championship is getting underway in Tokyo, drawing teams from all over the country. Among the newcomers is Kiyosumi High School from Nagano Prefecture. Yet its members have already earned respect: club president Hisa Takei for her tactical skill, Nodoka Haramura for her clear, calculated style, and Saki Miyanaga for her inexplicable, almost frightening luck. Saki, a quiet and reserved girl, has come not only to win but also to see her older sister, Teru Miyanaga, from whom she has been estranged since a family conflict. Teru, the superstar of high school mahjong, publicly denied having a sister and is willing to face Saki only across a mahjong table.

The road to that goal will not be easy, since the strongest young mahjong players in the country stand in the way of Saki and her team. They fall into two categories: some rely on knowledge of the rules, calculating probabilities and analyzing their opponents' styles and psychology, while others possess supernatural abilities that let them glimpse the future, see other players' hands or draw the tiles they need, and some shrine maidens can even call on Shinto gods for help. The big question remains when the decisive meeting of the Miyanaga sisters will finally take place.
