Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary

Jougoro Kobato enters Funato High School after a middle school failure caused by his habit of solving other people’s problems too cleverly. He decides to become an ordinary student who does not stand out, does not interfere, and does not use deduction unless he has to. Yuki Osanai makes the same pact with him for her own reasons. She looks quiet, fragile, and fond of sweets, but Kobato knows she is not as harmless as she seems. Their plan begins with simple rules and simple goals: buy snacks, attend class, avoid attention, and pass through school like normal people. That plan breaks almost immediately when a missing handbag, a bicycle theft, and other small incidents pull Kobato back into the exact kind of thinking he promised to stop.

Each case looks minor from the outside, but it exposes the parts of Kobato and Osanai they are trying to hide. Kobato cannot ignore puzzles once the pieces are in front of him. Osanai’s soft manner covers patience, memory, and a colder way of settling scores when someone crosses her. Kengo Dojima, an old classmate, keeps dragging Kobato into trouble because he trusts his mind more than his promise to stay ordinary. Summer plans around sweets become tangled with theft, revenge, and a kidnapping that shows how far Osanai can go when she feels wronged. By the time Kobato and Osanai admit their agreement has failed, their bond is no longer just a convenient pact. They separate because staying together keeps feeding the traits they wanted to bury, yet the distance only proves how strongly they understand each other. Their attempt to become ordinary turns into a quiet record of two people discovering that hiding sharp edges does not make them disappear.
