Exception

In the distant future, Earth is no longer a home, and humanity, driven from its native planet, reaches out toward another galaxy where it might still bargain with the cosmos for a chance to go on living. A scouting ship is dispatched to the planet X-10, tasked with preparing the world for terraforming before a massive vessel carrying settlers arrives. But the crew of this mission were not born in the ordinary way. On board operates a biological 3D printer called the Womb, which recreates people from stored data and biomaterial, printing the crew members one by one once the ship reaches its destination. Nina, Mack, Oscar, Patty and Lewis are meant to wake not as pioneers in any romantic sense, but as temporary copies, tools of an elaborate plan, doomed to toil for the sake of the originals who will come later. Everything changes when, during Lewis's printing, the ship is struck by a solar flare. The system malfunctions, and instead of a human being, a distorted creature emerges: alive, frightened, dangerous, and all too similar to the person it was supposed to be.
