Ruri Rocks

Ruri Tanigawa loves accessories and starts weekend trips to riverbeds and quarries to search for crystals. A chance meeting with graduate student Nagi Arato leads to her first proper field survey. With Nagi and Yoko Imari she learns safety rules, topo maps, grain and cleavage, streak and hardness. They follow quartz veins along fault lines, pan fine sand for traces of gold, check garnet sand in mountain streams, and open pockets of fluorite after reading the strata. Classmate Shoko Seto joins and keeps notes while Ruri misidentifies samples and then corrects them under the loupe. A find near an old tunnel draws attention and they file a report to avoid illegal collecting. Storms and broken tools slow the work and they return to a lab to cut thin sections and test with acid. A small discovery reaches local news and Ruri credits the method to Nagi and Yoko. Weekend hunts continue with permission from landowners and a museum workshop where kids wash gravel for pyrite and agate. Ruri chooses a geology elective and plans her first independent map while the group schedules the next trip.
