Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon

The compilation film retells season one. Kafka Hibino works in kaiju cleanup and still wants to join the Defense Force with his childhood friend Mina Ashiro. After an encounter that leaves a creature inside him, he gains the power to transform into a kaiju. He hides this while taking the entrance exam with the younger coworker Reno Ichikawa. The recap follows training, first deployments with the Third Division, and large scale incidents that push Kafka to fight while protecting his identity. Mina leads the unit. Vice captain Hoshina begins to suspect the unknown kaiju and tests the new recruits in drills and live combat. The feature stitches the major battles and character beats into one run up to the turning points that set season two in motion. It concludes with a new short about Hoshina on a rare day off, a light piece that sits outside the main action.
