On the island of Shinsenkyo the survivors regroup and push inland toward Hōrai, the seat of the immortals who guard the elixir. Criminals and their Yamada Asaemon minders form uneasy teams, trading information about Tao, a life force that decides whether a strike harms or heals. Training in Tao exposes gaps between partners and forces rival groups to cooperate when the island’s rulers, the Lord Tensen, divide and hunt them. Gabimaru’s focus wavers as fragments of memory slip, yet his goal to return home keeps him moving. Sagiri steadies the mixed party, while Nurugai, Shion, Fuchi and others take routes that probe Hōrai’s defenses, from shape shifting bodies to gardens that regenerate the dead. Each incursion costs people and time, but every retreat yields a method to read Tao balance and to break an immortal’s cycle. The path forward is simple and brutal.
