Cat Soup

Welcome to a world where reality is intertwined with surrealism and psychedelia. At its center lives a perfectly ordinary family of cats: a father who never says no to a drink, a mother who takes care of the household, a pensive older sister, Nyaako, and her restless younger brother, Nyatta. Here God, bored with eternity, entertains himself by performing in a sideshow, while Death has taken on a physical form and can be fought. And yet everyday life remains just as gray and unremarkable as ever.

When Nyatta tries to save his sister from Death, her soul is torn in two, and he sets out on a strange journey to restore it while she trails after him, empty and lifeless. So what is this story really about? Perhaps it is about a God weary of his endless existence, or about time that has frozen still, or about betrayal that wounds deepest of all. The film has room for struggle, a miraculous rescue and a brother's heartfelt concern for his sister. All of it is wrapped in a surreal shell and presented to the viewer almost without words, with only a handful of lines spoken over the entire running time. It is a truly strange and ambiguous piece of animation that leaves plenty to think about.
