Anne Shirley

Anne Shirley is sent by mistake to Green Gables when the Cuthberts expect a boy to help on the farm. Marilla plans to return her, but Matthew asks for a chance, and Anne promises to work and mind her temper. She enters school in Avonlea, quarrels with Gilbert Blythe after he mocks her hair, and turns the rivalry into steady study. She makes a close friendship with Diana Barry and a party with bottles goes wrong when Diana drinks the wrong cordial. Anne earns forgiveness by caring for Minnie May during a night emergency. Under Miss Stacy she joins recitations, nature walks, and extra lessons, then passes the Island exams and goes to Queen’s Academy. A scholarship opens the way to further study, but a sudden loss at home and Marilla’s health change her plans. Matthew dies and Anne gives up the award to stay at Green Gables and teach. Gilbert yields the Avonlea post to her and they reconcile. The term ends with Anne tending the farm with Marilla and choosing patience and hope for the road ahead.
