Arata Kouda is a first year middle school student living with his parents and older brother Suguru in a house that already feels tense from exams, expectations, and ordinary family friction. On his way home, Arata finds Kujima, a strange talkative creature from Russia that is neither fully bird nor human. Kujima is hungry, direct, and hard to ignore, so Arata brings the creature home instead of leaving it outside. His parents try to handle the situation with a mix of caution and pity, while Suguru sees Kujima as one more disturbance in a home where he is already under pressure. Kujima says it will stay only until spring, but that short promise is enough to change how the family spends its days. Meals, baths, shopping, school talk, and small arguments begin to revolve around the guest who does not fit any normal explanation.

Kujima does not solve the family’s problems. It makes them harder to hide. Arata becomes the person who tries to translate Kujima’s habits for everyone else, while also learning that kindness brings responsibility once the creature depends on him. Suguru’s irritation grows because Kujima interrupts his study routine and exposes how little room he has to fail. Their parents slowly adjust to feeding and sheltering someone they cannot classify, even as neighbors and classmates notice odd behavior around the house. Kujima steals, sings, complains, asks blunt questions, and treats human customs as puzzles rather than rules. Through one winter, the Kouda family is forced into contact with feelings they usually avoid. The house becomes louder and less orderly, but also less frozen. By the time spring comes closer, Kujima’s promised departure stops sounding like relief and begins to feel like a deadline none of them are ready to face.
