Junk Head

In the distant future, humanity is hurtling down a path of ruin. Global environmental destruction caused by chemical contamination, radioactive fallout, and UV rays coming through the patchy ozone layer has led to the deterioration of the human genome. People have achieved near-immortality through genetic engineering, but at the cost of losing the ability to have children.

Long ago, humans created artificial clone laborers called Marigans, who rebelled and built their own world deep underground. When a new disease threatens humanity, a man volunteers to descend into this subterranean labyrinth to investigate. After an accident destroys his body, only his head survives and is placed on a small robotic frame, and he continues his journey among bizarre creatures and dangers. This stop-motion feature was created largely by one person, director Takahide Hori, over many years.
