Klein Moretti wakes in a sooty port city with a stranger’s memories and a diary that points to rites no one should try alone. He brews the Seer potion, rides the fever of visions, and hides the change behind family dinners and a clerk’s routine. A recruitment letter pulls him into the Nighthawks under Dunn Smith, where contraband relics, coded notes, and corpses that speak in riddles all circle the same old case in Tingen. In a silent hall above gray fog he takes the seat of The Fool and gathers a handful of distant acquaintances into a disguised meeting, trading favors and small miracles that keep everyone breathing. Audrey Hall reads signs others miss, Alger Wilson bargains from the sea, and the table’s bargains echo back into Klein’s errands on grim backstreets. Each lead forces him to play polite with church deacons, bluff mad cultists, and shield his sister, until the trail points at a design too big for any squad, and he has to decide what to reveal and what to bury.
