Keisuke Niijima loses his wife Takae in a traffic accident and spends the next ten years only half living. He goes to work, buys ready made dinners, and shares a house with his daughter Mai without really speaking to her. Mai has grown into adulthood under the same silence, carrying grief that neither of them knows how to touch. One evening, an elementary school girl named Marika Shiraishi comes to their door and says she is Takae. Keisuke rejects it until she recalls things only his wife could know. Takae, now using Marika’s body, scolds both of them for letting time stop and begins repairing the home she left behind. She brings handmade lunches, pushes Mai toward work and confidence, and forces Keisuke to remember how to care for someone instead of only mourn.

The reunion slowly turns into a second farewell. Takae realizes that she has not been reborn in a simple way. Marika’s own life and mother, Chika, have been pushed aside while Takae’s regret keeps her in control. A young author with a similar experience helps her understand that she is possessing the body because she died with unfinished concern for her family. Once Keisuke and Mai begin standing again, staying becomes selfish. Takae asks them to live without waiting for her, but Keisuke cannot release the miracle at first. With help from Moriya at work and Mai’s own decision to move forward, he learns to cook, speak, and parent without Takae’s daily rescue. They stage a final sign that they have accepted life after her. Takae leaves Marika’s body, Marika returns to her mother, and the Niijimas keep the change she gave them without trying to hold her in the world.
