Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Disturbance

Kenshin Himura is drawn back toward the violence he tried to leave behind when Toshimichi Okubo is assassinated and the government asks him to stop Makoto Shishio. Shishio is another former assassin from the end of the old era, burned and discarded by the same side he served, and now preparing to overthrow the Meiji government from Kyoto. Kenshin understands that Shishio is not an enemy Kaoru, Yahiko, or Sanosuke should be dragged into, so he leaves the dojo alone. On the road he meets Misao Makimachi, a young fighter searching for Aoshi Shinomori and the Oniwabanshu. Her questions force Kenshin to face the people left behind by earlier battles, and she travels with him toward Kyoto while Shishio’s men begin testing him before he reaches the city.

Kyoto becomes a place where Kenshin must rebuild both his weapon and his resolve. His reverse blade sword is broken, and the search for a replacement leads him to Seiku Arai, whose father forged the blade Kenshin carried. Chō of the Ten Swords threatens Arai’s family, forcing Kenshin into a fight where his vow not to kill is pushed hard. Meanwhile, Sanosuke follows and trains under Anji, learning a destructive technique without knowing how closely Anji is tied to Shishio. Aoshi also moves toward Kyoto, obsessed with settling his defeat against Kenshin. Shishio gathers the Ten Swords, plans to burn Kyoto, and prepares a wider strike against the government. Kenshin trains with Hiko Seijūrō to master the final technique of his school, because stopping Shishio requires more than surviving duels. It requires choosing life strongly enough to defeat someone who turned betrayal, pain, and hatred into a new war.
