The Imaginary

Rudger is not the kind of boy people can easily explain, because his entire existence depends on one person’s imagination. He is Amanda’s imaginary friend, created out of childhood loneliness and joy, and for a while that bond is enough to make him real in the only way that matters. Then an accident tears Amanda away, and Rudger is left in a terrifying state where being forgotten is not an emotional fear, it is a physical death sentence. Alone, he discovers a hidden world where other imaginaries gather, fragile beings that survive only as long as someone somewhere still remembers them. The refuge feels like a miracle until a figure named Mr Bunting appears, a predator who hunts imaginaries and consumes them, turning their disappearance into something intentional and cruel. Rudger is forced to run, hide, and learn the rules of a place built from stories, all while clinging to the hope that Amanda can remember him before he fades. As he meets other imaginaries with their own scars, he begins to understand that imagination is not only comfort, it is also responsibility, because creating something means leaving it vulnerable. The heart of Rudger’s struggle is simple and brutal: survive long enough to get back to Amanda, and do not let the hunter reach him first.
