Mary Saotome enters Hyakkaou Private Academy as a transfer student from an ordinary family and quickly learns that the school is ruled by gambling rather than grades or background. Her first match is set up to break her confidence and push her into debt, but the loss teaches her how the academy works. Students with money and status build traps, control clubs, and use debt to turn weaker classmates into housepets. Mary reunites with Tsuzura Hanatemari, a bullied former classmate who has already been crushed by the system, and decides to climb high enough to protect herself without becoming someone else’s property. She starts taking tables apart by reading rules, spotting rigged setups, and using an opponent’s pride against them. Yukimi Togakushi gives her access to a small gambling den, but that space becomes a target once stronger players notice Mary’s rise. Sachiko Juraku tries to make Mary submit through pressure and humiliation. Aoi Mibuomi offers help through the Full Bloom Society, but his support comes with plans that would turn Mary into a piece in his campaign against the student council. Each game narrows her options. Trusting friends can save her, but trust also creates openings for betrayal. By the end, Mary has gained a place in the academy’s power structure, rejected ownership by richer students, and learned that winning at Hyakkaou means staying free after the game is over.
