Mitsuha lives in a mountain town and wishes for a bigger life. Taki is a student in Tokyo with a part time job. They begin to switch bodies without warning and leave notes to keep school, work, and family from falling apart. Rules appear with practice. They set schedules, forbid risky choices, and help each other in small ways that change both lives. Taki tries to meet Mitsuha in person and the number he has does not connect. A trip to the lake district shows a crater where her town once stood. He learns the comet that passed split and a fragment destroyed Itomori long before he began to switch. He hikes to the shrine on the ridge, drinks the sake Mitsuha left as an offering, and wakes in her body on the morning of the impact. With Tessie and Sayaka he triggers an explosion to cut power and uses the emergency system to push an evacuation. At twilight they meet on the rim and trade names on each other’s hands before memory fades. Mitsuha runs to convince her father to move everyone. Time resets. Years later in Tokyo they pass on stairs and stop. They ask for names.
