Ichigo Kurosaki has been able to see spirits for as long as he can remember, but he never wanted a role in anything bigger than his own life. That changes the night a Hollow attacks his family and a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki steps in. When Rukia is badly hurt, Ichigo takes her power and becomes a substitute Soul Reaper, patrolling his town and learning that the line between the living and the dead is policed by rules he does not fully understand. As new enemies appear and friends around him reveal their own abilities, Ichigo gets pulled toward the Soul Society itself, where saving one person can mean defying an entire system.
