Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Jinta Yadomi lives as a shut in after leaving school. One summer his childhood friend Meiko Menma Honma appears and talks to him. She died years ago and only he can see her. She asks him to grant a wish she cannot remember. Jinta gathers the old Super Peace Busters at their base. Naruko visits more often and old feelings surface. Atsumu doubts Jinta and even dresses as Menma to test him. Tetsudo urges everyone to face the past. The group hears that Menma once spoke about a firework, so they ask a craftsman to build a large rocket and raise money to pay for it. They meet Menma’s mother, whose grief turns into anger, and they promise to stop running away. The rocket launches but Menma does not pass on, so they search again. Menma remembers that the wish came from a promise to Jinta’s mother to help him cry and move forward. She writes letters to each friend. Her presence fades and the group finally sees her together. They play one last game of hide and seek. Jinta confesses, Menma says thank you and goodbye, and she disappears while the friends stay connected.
