The Colors Within

Totsuko Higurashi studies at a Catholic girls school and keeps hidden the way she sees people as colors. Most classmates appear to her through shades tied to emotion, but Kimi Sakunaga gives off the color Totsuko loves most. When Kimi suddenly leaves school, Totsuko follows her to a used bookstore and pretends she can play piano so she can stay close. There they meet Rui Kagehira, a quiet boy who collects musical equipment and plays the theremin. The lie turns into a real plan when the three decide to form a band. Totsuko has to learn an instrument from the beginning, Kimi keeps hiding the fact that she left school from her grandmother, and Rui struggles with the future his family expects from him.

Their rehearsals become a place where each of them can speak without explaining everything directly. Totsuko watches colors shift as the others open up, but she still cannot solve their problems for them. Kimi uses music to face the distance between who she is and the role she keeps acting out at home. Rui wants to follow sound and invention, yet his family’s island clinic pulls him toward a different life. Small meetings at the bookstore, practice sessions, and the coming performance give the three a deadline that makes secrets harder to keep. The band does not erase fear or family pressure. It gives them a shared language before they have the courage to say everything plainly. By the time they stand together to play, Totsuko understands that seeing someone’s color is not the same as knowing them, and that friendship begins when she stops only watching and starts answering back.
