After centuries of quiet, Fushi reawakens in modern Japan. His essence once smothered the Nokkers across the land, but survivors now hide inside human bodies. A junior high student, Yuki Aoki, offers him a place to stay as Fushi learns phones, school schedules, and how to pass as ordinary. In the same city, Mizuha Minamoto, heir to the Hayase line, is drawn to Fushi while a Nokker stirs within her. Strange incidents at Yuki’s school and reports of sudden revivals point to Nokkers adapting to hosts. The Beholder takes on a human guise as a boy named Satoru, prodding Fushi’s choices. Old allies return in present-day bodies, and Fushi tries to build a life around them without exposing their nature. As the threat spreads through crowds rather than battlefields, Fushi must choose between purging hosts at terrible cost or finding a way to contain Nokkers within a society he has long wanted to protect.
