Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

Sakuna lives carelessly in the Lofty Realm as a spoiled harvest goddess, enjoying rank and comfort without understanding the work behind her own power. Her life changes when a group of starving humans enters the divine capital while fleeing danger from the Lowly Realm. In the confusion, Sakuna causes serious damage to the capital’s rice storehouse. Lady Kamuhitsuki punishes her by sending her to Hinoe Island, a place filled with demons and tied to the legacy of Sakuna’s parents. She is forced to bring the humans with her, including Tauemon, Myrthe, Kinta, Yui, and Kaimaru, and she cannot return until she helps clear the island and learns to sustain them. What begins as exile becomes a daily struggle built around shelter, food, and survival.

On the island, Sakuna fights demons with her farm tools and divine raiment while also learning how to grow rice by hand. Tauemon teaches what he can, Myrthe cooks and cares for the group, Kinta works toward blacksmithing, and Yui helps with weaving. Each harvest restores part of Sakuna’s strength, so farming and battle become inseparable. She meets Ashigumo, a warrior connected to her parents, and learns that the island’s demons are tied to older corruption and the evil god Omizuchi. The humans slowly become more than a burden, and Sakuna changes from someone who avoids responsibility into the person holding the settlement together. As the truth about Tama, her parents, and the island’s past comes forward, she prepares to face Omizuchi not only to end her punishment, but to protect the home she and the others have built from labor, loss, and rice.
