Ten years ago a catastrophe struck a quiet coastal city. Shirou Emiya, who miraculously survived the inferno, was left completely alone, having lost his home and family. In his darkest hour, a mercenary magus named Kiritsugu Emiya not only saved him but adopted him as his son. Influenced by Kiritsugu, a man obsessed with saving the world at any cost, Shirou came to dream of becoming a hero of justice who protects the weak and prevents disaster, whatever the price.

Ten years later, Shirou goes to school, lives a quiet life and keeps studying magecraft from the books his father left behind. But his world collapses again when he is dragged into a brutal battle between magi: the Holy Grail War. Fighting to survive, he forms a contract with a mysterious warrior who calls herself Saber, a Heroic Spirit summoned for battle, and learns that the catastrophe of ten years ago was caused by the previous Grail War. In this ancient ritual seven magi, the Masters, summon legendary heroes known as Servants and fight one another, and the victor receives an artifact that can grant any wish.
