Kinokoinu Mushroom Pup

Hotaru Yuyami is a picture book author who loses his dog Hanako and stops moving through life with any real direction. Work stalls, his house feels empty, and even simple routines keep pulling him back to the pet that is gone. While looking at the tree in his yard, he notices a pink mushroom that moves on its own. The mushroom becomes a strange dog like creature, and Hotaru takes it in without fully understanding what it is. He names it Kinokoinu. The creature is soft, curious, stubborn, and impossible to treat like a normal pet. It eats, wanders, interrupts Hotaru’s work, and fills the house with noise that he is not ready for but cannot completely reject.

Kinokoinu slowly pulls Hotaru back into contact with other people. His editor Komako visits because his writing has stopped, and the mushroom researcher Yara becomes involved after seeing that the creature is not an ordinary animal. Hotaru’s childhood friend Ayumi also returns to his daily life, and visits to family places force him to face grief he has been avoiding. Kinokoinu learns letters, goes outside, meets neighbors, causes trouble in shops and parks, and keeps acting on needs that Hotaru has to answer in the present. The creature does not replace Hanako. It makes the loss harder to ignore, then gives Hotaru a reason to keep living around it. Through small incidents at home, at work, and near his family grave, Hotaru begins writing again and accepts that caring for Kinokoinu means opening the door to a new bond while still carrying the old one.
